Amidst all the whirlwind of novelties that the fashion industry brings with it season after season, more and more people are taking care to remember the importance of quality clothes, the good ones, the ones that last a lifetime. Reflecting on this, the first thing that came to mind was the Adolfo Dominguez advert in which the slogan 'Be older' urged consumers to consume less, but better. Counterproductive for a company whose ultimate goal is economic, you might say, or perhaps another of those marketing strategies with no other objective than virality. Maybe, but undoubtedly a brilliant idea, and if possible an even more brilliant copy. With just three words, the brand has managed to highlight the importance of quality, fabrics, pattern, origin and, in short, the sustainability of the garments. Being old is not the same as being old, and we agree.

So, as you may have guessed, this article is dedicated to conscious buying, to quality (and in that, we are experts). So here's the list you need to look out for to build a trend-resistant wardrobe, with jumpers that won't warp after three washes, jeans that won't fade in less time than a TV commercial, and T-shirts that won't give out on the second day at the gym. Let's get to it.
So what makes a garment quality?
"Quality garments have to respect three fundamentals: design, technique and raw material. The first one tells us about a product created to respond to a current lifestyle, designed to be comfortable, practical and with a timeless style that will last in our wardrobe for years. The second tells us about how we do things, how we cut the pattern, how we sew it. It tells us about the details during the making and how the experience in knowledgeable hands to make the garment look perfect when we wear it. The third has to do with the origin of the fabric, but also with who made it and under what conditions," says Roberto Verino in an article for Vogue Spain..

So, focusing on the designer's words, the first thing we will refer to is the care in the materials. Quality clothes are made of durable and resistant materials, such as cotton, wool, silk and genuine leather. These materials come at a higher price than cheaper synthetic fabrics, but if you have any garments made from these materials in your wardrobe, you will know that they are worth the investment.
But here's another dilemma: is real leather more sustainable, or synthetic leather? Well, synthetic leather is made from materials such as polyurethane and PVC, which are non-biodegradable and petroleum-based materials. It is also less durable, which means that once it is worn or damaged and needs to be disposed of, it can take hundreds of years to decompose, whereas animal skin can be recycled and reused to make other products such as carpets or upholstery, which reduces its environmental impact. This choice is up to the individual, taking into account, above all, personal preference.
Seams are another important factor in determining the quality of a garment. They should be straight and even, without loose threads or irregularities, and well reinforced, especially in high-stress areas such as the shoulders, underarms and hips. We don't want the seams of our garment to have more curves than a roller coaster or to unravel at the slightest movement, do we?
It is also key to pay attention to the details, such as labels, hems, lapels, buttons... Labels should be sewn firmly and should not cause irritation to the skin, and hems should be straight and well done, as well as the lapels well cut and fixed correctly. We all know that it's the little details that make the difference, and when it comes to looking impeccable in the most special garments, even more so.

And last but not least, although it is not always true, a renowned brand usually ensures a higher quality of the garment in question. After all, the investment in research and development will be greater, as well as the selection of high quality materials and more advanced production techniques. And as we at Esdemarca know a lot about that, we bring you some signature options that will surprise you with their timeless design and, let's face it, undoubted quality. A good way to consume consciously and get started in a practice that is so necessary to reduce our environmental impact (and at the same time get the perfect wardrobe, and always on trend). With Adolfo Domínguez's permission... Be older!
