Born in New York in 1921, Iris Barrel grew up in a family that valued creativity. She studied Art History at New York University and design at Wisconsin-Madison, laying the groundwork for a life dedicated to aesthetics. Her career began in the editorial offices of magazines like Women’s Wear Daily and through collaborations with renowned creators of the era.
The founding of Old World Weavers alongside her husband Carl Apfel marked a turning point in her life. The company specialized in historical fabrics, leading them to work on prestigious restoration projects, including interior design for the White House across nine different administrations. This period cemented her reputation as an expert in decorative arts and an influential figure in interior design.
Iris Apfel built her style empire on a simple rule: there are no rules. Her fearless use of colors, dazzling jewelry, and unexpected combinations of garments turned her image into a cultural icon. Iris firmly believed that style is an extension of oneself, a way to tell the world who you are.
“More is more and less is a bore,” Iris would say, summarizing her personal philosophy. She didn’t shy away from mixing expensive with affordable, classic with modern, showing that fashion is a game where creativity always wins. For Iris, style wasn’t about age or resources but about attitude.
In 2005, the exhibition Rara Avis: The Irreverent Iris Apfel at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York highlighted her creative genius, drawing global attention to her work and her unparalleled sense of fashion. Since then, Iris collaborated with luxury brands, designed accessory collections, and became an international model at an age when many consider retiring. At 97, she signed with IMG Models, challenging beauty and age standards in the industry.
Her book Colourful, published in 2023, distilled her experiences, wisdom, and unique perspective on life, becoming a guide for those seeking to live authentically.
Iris Apfel was more than a fashion icon; she was a movement unto herself. Her life taught us that it’s never too late to reinvent ourselves, that style has no age limits, and that true beauty lies in embracing what makes us unique. In her own words: “There’s nothing more liberating than being yourself.” With Iris, we learned that every day is an opportunity to shine with a style only we can create.
